Claiming to be the sunniest spot in all of Europe, the Croatian island of Hvar is your perfect destination: pathways lined with lavender vines lead to secluded coves, small fishing villages and local vineyards, while the ferries and catamarans carry visitors across the calm, blue waters to the surrounding islands, all worthy of exploration. Hvar is the longest of all the Croatian islands and is home to three towns. The largest of these, also named Hvar, served as an important harbor for the Venetian Adriatic fleet from the late 12th century through most of the 18th century. To remind us of its former importance, Hvar houses a thick-walled fortress overlooking the harbor and, in the very heart of the port, a large Arsenal, an imposing building built in 1611.
